Write Essays Using GPT-3

Natural Language Processing October 20, 2021

The purpose of this activity is purely for the purpose of spreading information and knowledge to teachers, students and any other interested parties about AI.

GPT-3 is a language model created by OpenAI with 175 billion parameters. It was the most advanced NLP model when it came out. GPT-3 could accomplish about any language task from classification, translation, summarizaion, writing code etc... Because of how advanced GPT-3 is, we decided to try out national examination (KCPE and KCSE) essays on GPT-3 and ask a valid proffesional to mark it.

First, we used GPT-3 to create essays from past KCSE papers (2020) and recorded the responses from GPT-3. The examination are split into 3 questions, for each question we took samples of how GPT-3 responded and made videos of us trying to come up with the perfect response from GPT 3.

ENGLISH: Question 1A

"Write a story ending with: That is when I realized that a genuine friend is one who walks in while the rest walk out on you"

In this first video, I try to make GPT 3 to write a story After a bunch of unsuccessful attempts, i start to get acceptable results when i change between the GPT 3 engines. This is not the ideal way to do it but I needed some results to submit to Teachers for some marking.

ENGLISH: Question 1B

"Write a composition explaining how we can conserve our forest"

GPT 3 finds it easier to write this formart or Essays compared to question 1A. You can see the whole document of how GPT 3 responded below. We took 2 samples of the Essay and submitted them both to the teachers.

ENGLISH: Question 1C

"Sometimes quitting a relationship may be the only option but it hurts loved ones. Using relevant illustrations from Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s house, write an essay in support of this statement."

It was interesting to see how GPT-3 managed to write something about Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s house. This was the easiest task for GPT-3 to handle as compared to the other Questions. GPT-3 seems to have knowledge about books writtens and can even quote and provide arguments based on the book.

KISWAHILI

"Andika insha ukijadili kuhusu umuhimu wa msitu" (Write an Essay discussing the importance of Forests)

Because GPT-3 was trained on the material on the internet, which aurguably its mostly English, we were curious to see how it would respond to swahili Content. As you can see from the video, it did not perform as well as the others but had something to show. There are roughly 6,500 languages are spoken in the world today and Swahili is not among the most popular ones. So it is still impressive GPT-3 managed to recognize some swahili.

The responses from GPT-3 for the above questions are contained in the document below for your pleasure.

I hope the above experiment opens up your mind on just how advanced AI can be, and its getting better and better everyday in not just language tasks, but almost every other thing we do. willrobotstakemyjob.com is a website purely dedicated to see the likelihood of AI replacing humans in the various fields of work. This number will only go higher, not lower.
